On July 12, 2013, a Boeing B787 caught fire on the stand at Heathrow Airport. The AAIB investigation determined that the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) was the source of the fire.

RTI was asked to investigate possible failure modes of the ELT by fabricating full-scale exemplars for destructive laboratory testing while monitoring the electrical parameters and thermal run-a-way effects of the primary lithium-ion batteries.
